The American Association of Nurses reports that America will require 275000 nurses annually from 2020 to 2030. The factors that contribute to nursing shortage can be addressed through policy initiatives. They include unhealthy working environments, high workload, inadequate number of nurses being trained by nursing institutions, and burnout. Nursing shortage affect the health of your constitutes, as seen from the increased medical errors, delays in care provision, increased healthcare costs, morbidity, and mortality rates (Haddad et al., 2022). Therefore, I request your support in lobbying the adoption of a policy that will increase the number of nursing students being trained in nursing institutions and demand health organizations to implement interventions that prioritize nurses’ needs.

Positive and Negative Outcomes

Addressing the issue of nursing shortage through a policy initiative will have significant benefits to communities and organizations. First, it will contribute to improved safety, quality, and efficiency of care that the communities receive. For example, adequate nursing staffing levels will translate into patient-centered nursing care, which minimizes safety issues such as nursing errors and delays in nursing care. Addressing the problem will also reduce the disease burden on the communities. This is seen from the reduction in overall healthcare costs, hospitalization stays, morbidity, and mortality (Amiri et al., 2020). The state currently spends significant resources in financing the healthcare systems and addressing community’s needs. Some of the resources are used in managing the negative consequences of inadequate staffing among nurses. However, addressing the problem through policy actions will benefit both health organizations and the state through the reduction in healthcare spending and resource utilization to address preventable problems arising from nursing shortage. The negative outcomes that will occur if there is failure to address the problem include increased workload for the few nursing staff, burnout, high turnover rates, and poor quality of care that is associated with medical errors, and elevated morbidity and mortality rates among hospitalized patients (Haddad et al., 2022).

One of such is practicum experience. Practicum or clinical experience helps baccalaureate-prepared nurse have a chance of contributing to an identified patients’ outcomes. As way of continued learning, the nurse can reflect on such experiences. One way of reflection is video reflection. As such, this presentation explores a reflection on the practicum experience. In addition, the presentation will also focus on a formulated intervention used in addressing a health problem impacting a chosen patient.

ASSESSMENT OF THE INTERVENTION CONTRIBUTION

The patient whom I had an experience with during my clinical hours is the Mr. Y. He is my neighbor and suffers from diabetes. He also has congestive heart failure as a comorbid condition. The patient was diagnosed with diabetes five years ago and has been treating it with medications, lifestyle, and behavioral modifications. Three months ago, he was also diagnosed with congestive heart failure and initiated treatment. The main evidence-based practice intervention applied in patient education. I have managed to educate the patient about lifestyle modifications and the importance of medication adherence. I also helped coordinate interprofessional collaboration for better health outcomes. Interprofessional collaboration is especially key in managing the patient’s comorbid conditions. Such interventions have been connected to improved quality of life.

PATIENT FEEDBACK AND PATIENT EXPERIENCE

One of the sources through which one can know about the impact of an implemented intervention is patient feedback (Hockenberry & Wilson, 2018). In most cases, patients give honest opinion on what they think regarding the intervention and how their lives have been impacted by the intervention in question. Mr Y gave a feedback on the intervention. Earlier, Mr Y shared some worrying statements regarding his condition. conditions have increased the healthcare costs that he incurs in treating them. He faces the challenge of increased need for frequent hospital visits, hospitalization, and the purchase of expensive medications. He has also lost his social and occupational productivity due to health problems. He is worried that the medications he currently uses may predispose him to further adverse health outcomes. The increased demands due to the conditions have affected the social, emotional, and psychological wellbeing of his family. However, the intervention positively impacted on the patient’s health. He was appreciative of the intervention and indicated improved medication adherence and better increased involvement in physical exercise and healthy diet.

Existing Organizational Resources That Could Be Leveraged To Improve a Safety Improvement Plan for Safe Medication Administration

Organizational resources that can be leveraged to improve the safety improvement plan include human resources and technological advancements such as Telemedicine and the EHR. The human resource, including nurses, pharmacists, and physicians, can educate patients about their medications and teach them strategies to prevent medication errors at home (Kusch et al., 2018). Besides, the human resource can be encouraged to give evidence-based ideas to enhance the safety improvement plan further. In addition, technological advancements in the organization, such as Telemedicine, can facilitate patient education and follow-up to ensure they are taking the right medications at the correct dosages. The EHR can be used to provide patient data that will be entered into the BCMA database.

Conclusion

RCA helps identify what transpired, establish why the problem occurred, and embark on the necessary improvements and amendments. The purpose of the RTA was to identify the causes of MAEs, which nurses perpetrated in the unit. Factors associated with MAEs in the unit included inadequate knowledge of medications and drug administration protocol, nurse fatigue due to high work overload, insufficient time, distractions, and assumptions. The proposed safety improvement plan will include adopting BCMA technology and providing patient education to minimize medication errors at the hospital and at home.
